ESSAIS HISTORIQUES ET POLITIQUES SUR LES ANGLO-AMERICAINS
by Hilliard d'Auberteuil, M.
Bruxelles, 1781. Four parts bound in two volumes. xvi,198,xii,199-441pp. plus 5 plates and 4 folding maps;xii,208,xiv,-436pp. plus 4 plates and 4 folding maps. Half titles. Contemporary gilt-tooled French calf, spines gilt extra, leather labels, gilt armorial stamping on covers. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Slight wear at hinges, else a fine set. An excellent work, one of the rarest histories of the Revolution, by a French historian. The first two parts give a brief history of the colonies, but are mainly devoted to the growing troubles from 1764 to 1775. The second two parts are devoted to the actual Revolution up to 1782. The maps depict New York, Virginia and Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware, the Great Lakes region, Canada, New England, the Carolinas and Georgia, and the east coast of America. Most of the plates illustrate political scenes and personages, including Washington and Franklin; the most dramatic plate, however, is an imaginary representation of the burning of New York in December 1776. One of the rarest early histories of the Revolution. SABIN 31899. HOWES H493, "aa."
