Mostly autobiographical, Der Steppenwolf is Mr. Hesse's best-known work. A blend of Eastern mysticism and Western culture, it is one of modern literature's most prosaic evocations of the soul's journey to liberation, through epiphany. Mr. Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1946.
