The compiler of this group of German folk songs was Karl Joseph Simrock [1802-1876], born in Bonn, the son of one of Beethoven's major music publishers. Karl Simrock achieved his literary reputation through the popularity of his modern rendering of the 'Nibelungenlied' (1827) and of the poems of Walther von der Vogelweide (1833). Between 1839 and 1867, Simrock published an extensive collection of Deutschen Volksbücher. The text offered here, Simrock's collection of Volkslieder, also appeared as volume VIII of this larger work, which eventually was collected in thirteen volumes. German text printed in Fraktur. .
