1854. A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1854. Original light brown wrappers. Very early American edition -- published, in fact, the day after T.L. McElrath's first edition. McElrath was running the novel serially in the American version of Household Words, and had paid $1,500.00 for the right to have advance sheets of the conclusion -- so as to be first out with a complete edition -- which he did on August 8th (prior to serial completion). But Harper had been typesetting all along, chapter by chapter, got one of the first copies of McElrath's publication, and had their own edition on the streets the very next day -- August 9th. Harper priced its edition at 12-1/2 cents, half McElrath's price, so as to kill McElrath's sales -- which it did.~This copy is in good-to-very good condition, with some chipping of the delicate spine but with remarkably little wear to the two covers; the front wrapper bears the small bookseller sticker of T.J. Crowen, 699 Broadway -- probably the first retailer of this copy. Podeschi (Yale) A139. (Inventory #: 13478)
