London: Chapman and Hall, 1865 Two volumes bound into one. Illustrated by Marcus Stone. First edition, first printing. Finely bound in red calf and red marbled boards by Mudie's Select Library, with five raised bands to the spine, contrasting green title label, lettered in gilt, spine decorated in gilt, boards ruled in blind, all edges marbled, red marbled endpapers. About near fine, with some very light and scattered foxing to some pages, bright plates and pages without the usual toning, spine very lightly cracked and holding inside the rear cover but sturdy overall, minor fading to the spine, some rubbing and a few faint spots of minor soiling to the boards, light scratching to rear board, otherwise bright and fresh binding. Overall, a very handsome copy. Smith I, 15. Originally published serially in 20 installations issued in 19 monthly parts from May 1864-November 1865, Our Mutual Friend is the last novel Dickens completed in his lifetime, leaving his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, (1870) incomplete. Our Mutual Friend remains popular among readers because of its compelling plot line, which examines the advantages and disadvantages of individual wealth. The story begins with John Harmon, the estranged son of a wealthy miser, who has inherited his father's money and, as a condition of his inheritance, arranged to marry Bella Wilfer. Instead of greeting his fortune, Harmon fakes his own death and watches from disguise as his father's wealth brings fortune and misfortune to various members of the community before revealing his true identity. In this classic novel, Dickens revisits many of the themes from his earlier works, including the corruptive power of money and the virtues of the hardworking poor.. Illus. by Stone, Marcus. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
