1894. Original manuscript. Very Good. 2pp, black ink in a fine, clear hand, 30 lines of text. Tells McIlvaine that he cannot get there for dinner because he is so busy working that he has cancelled all social engagemements. "... I had hope to see you at the Sketch Club Annual but have had to throw that up with the other things. My work at the Academy confines me so closely ... a lot of outside illustrating which I contracted for ... I wish you would drop into the Academy when you are in town ...." Signed, Milton Bancroft. 7" x 4.5" Milton Herbert Bancroft (1867-1947) was an American Impressionist painter. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1886 to 1892, served briefly as Superintendent there, taught at Swarthmore College, &c. In 1894, the year of this letter, Bancroft left for Europe where he would train with French Impressionists in Paris for the next five years. Capt. Charles McIlvaine (1840-1909) was a veteran Civil War officer and a mushroom expert. (Inventory #: 038354)
