A Proclamation for a day of Public Thanksgiving and Praise
Boston: William White, 1857. unbound. Broadside. Measures 21.5" x 17.75". This broadside dating to October 29, 1857 is a proclamation by Governor Henry Gardner for Thanksgiving. Issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and given at the Council Chamber in Boston with the advice and connect of the Executive Council, the proclamation appoints Thursday, 26th November as a day of 'Public Thanksgiving, Praise and Prayer'. By the beginning of the 19th century, the final Thursday in November had become a customary date in most states. In 1863, by a presidential proclamation of Abraham Lincoln, Thanksgiving was celebrated on the same date by all states.The broadside is in good condition with wear along the original folds. Minor repair stains are visible near the top and bottom edges of the centerfold. Residue tape marking along some portions on edges. Laid down on paper. (Inventory #: 269901)
