New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1973). First Edition. Hardcover. 0-698-20278-3 . [nice copy, just a touch of soiling to top edge; jacket a bit faded at spine, unobtrusive closed tears at bottom rear hinge and top of front panel, light soiling to rear panel]. Young adult novel, set in Harlem, about a 13-year-old African-American boy who's "well on his way to being hooked for good on heroin." Notable for (among other things) the rawness of its language, it became one of a dozen books that were removed from school library shelves by a New York school district in 1975, and consequently figured in an important legal case (Island Trees School District vs. Pico) which resulted in a 1982 Supreme Court ruling affirming that the First Amendment placed limitations on such censorious actions by school boards. A film adaptation (with the setting changed to Los Angeles) appeared in 1978, starring Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield, and directed by Ralph Nelson. . (Inventory #: 22402)
