Contemporary vellum, gilt title panels to spines, speckled edges. Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to extremities, spine ends bumped, boards slightly bowed, stain to spine of Volume II. Very light toning to text, somewhat heavier in placing, light foxing to a few leaves. A handsome copy. * Only edition. This is a carefully edited, translated and well-annotated anthology of classic writings on maritime law for an Italian audience. Arranged chronologically, its oldest work is the Byzantine Rhodian Sea Law (7th century CE); its newest work is the 1681 Marine Ordinance of Louis XIV. Among the other texts are the Laws of Oleron, the Laws of Wisby and a selection of laws from the Theodosian Code relating to maritime affairs.
