The Ordinances as They Are, or Six Questions Answered; with the Baptist Articles of Faith: to which are Added a Poem on Creation.
by Decker, S. J.
Cortland [N.Y.]: S. C. Clisbe & Co. Printers, 1847 First edition.. Some browning; board edges rubbed; some wear to the spine; a very good copy.. 12mo, contemporary black morocco spine, marbled boards, 166 pages. The Baptist pastor from McGrawville argues for immersion and against loose communion churches; includes some hint of the alliance of religious sentiment and Jacksonian populism: ìI am a Republican, a Democrat in its best sense, not as a partizan, but a staunch believer in equal rights and privileges.î The twenty-page poem, in closely-printed couplets, takes a rather erato-pastoral approach to the creation story, with much in the way of tangled grape and woodbine and the dimpled alabaster of Eveís cheek. Early ownerís ink signature on the front free endpaper (with some bleeding at and early date staining the title page a trifle). Starr, Baptist Bibliography, D1201. (Inventory #: 17603)
First editions in 19th and early 20th century eccentric religious movements, popular entertainments, popular medicine, literature and Americana. Books and pamphlets bought and sold.
