Contemporary sprinkled sheep, quite worn around the extremities, spine darkened and lacking the title label, front endpaper stained, but withal a good, tight copy. Webster's famous American Dictionary was first published in New York in 1828 in two large quarto volumes. The following year the work was abridged and published in a one-volume octavo format. In this format the dictionary was reprinted many times. Elizabethtown's Edward Sanderson printed several editions from the same stereotype plates, first for N. and J. White and later White and Sheffield, between the years 1836 and 1843. In 1841 an appendix was added and "Revised edition" was added to the title. American Imprints 42-5078; Skeel, Noah Webster, 627.
