A surprised Stafford writes: "I have been surprised to receive from you upon two occasions ... papers ... in which my name is inserted among many others as having accepted the office of Vice Presidnt of the British Beneficient Institution ... Until I receive a satisfactory explanation of the above I can return no answer to the invitation to be present at the Dinner ..."
