Halkett was writing as lieutenant-governor of Jersey, a position he held from 1821-30, after which he became comander-in-chief of Bombay. Having formed the Kings German Legion in 1803, he went on to command the 2nd Light Infantry Batallion serving in Hanover and Copenhagen. Halkett made his name at the battle of Salamanca in the Peninsular War and later at Waterloo where he was severely wounded, but also mentioned in despatches. (Inventory #: 304875)
