ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
by CARROLL, LEWIS
TENNIEL, JOHN pom 27000 damp stain 6/14. CARROLL,LEWIS. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. NY: Appleton 1866 / London: Macmillan 1872. 2 volumes, 8vo, 192, 224p., red cloth stamped in gold. "Alice" has slightest bit of wear to outer joints at top with the slightest bit of cover soil and a trace of foxing on endpapers otherwise it is a beautiful copy. "Through The Looking Glass" is near Fine. Both are housed in a red morocco and cloth custom drop-back box stamped in gold, with cloth chemises for each volume. First edition, second issue of "Alice" and for all practical purposes the first available printing. The publishing history of this title is now well known. After the first printing of 2000 copies, Tenniel was unhappy with the quality of printing of the illustrations. All copies were recalled and only a few copies of the recalled 1865 Alice are known to exist. The remainder of the first issue sheets (1952 copies) were sent to New York and bound by Appleton with a new title page dated 1866. In London, Macmillan made a new printing by a different printer (Clay) with a new title page dated 1866. So although the 1866 Appleton edition is the second issue of the first edition, it is the first "available" edition. The "Through The Looking Glass" is a first edition. Because "Alice" was an immediate success most copies were well read and very few have survived in this beautiful condition. See WMG 9, 21.
