An autobiographical account of the capture and captivity of William John Charles Moens (1833-1904), an English antiquary who was held for ransom in Italy for several months in 1865. The author gives a detailed description of his life with the brigands in the mountainous countryside of Italy, interesting in that it includes the mundane aspects of everyday life as well as the tragic and even the occasional comic moment.
