Palisades / 2. VII 44 / Thomas Mann." [Mann (1875-1955) moved to Pacific Palisades, California, with his family in 1940. Newark-born Charles Jackson went to Hollywood where he was befriended by Thomas Mann. The book referenced in this inscription is Jackson's novel, THE LOST WEEKEND, published in 1944 and describing five days in the life of an alcoholic, thought to be autobiographical.
