This form authorizes the sheriff of a North Carolina county to detain a person on the authority of the court. The present form reads (with the manuscript portion in brackets): "State of North-Carolina. To the Sheriff of [Warren] County: Greeting. You are hereby commanded to take the body[y] of [Samuel Taylor] if to be found in your bailiwick, and [him] safely keep so that you have [him] before the Justices of the county court of Pleas and Quarter-Sessions to be held for the county of [Warren] at the court-house in [Warrenton] on the [fourth] Monday in [February] next, then and there to answer [unto us on a presentment made by the grand jury for not keeping up sign & mile posts as overseer of a road agreeable to face]." It is signed by M Duke Johnson as Clerk of the Court. Warrenton is a small town near the border with Virginia. (Inventory #: WRCAM52166)
