1896. New York : Cincinnati : Chicago: American Book Company, 1896. 5 pp undated ads. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition of this collection of 27 nonfiction "stories" of the state of Georgia. examples are "Two Soldiers of the Revolution," "A War of Extermination," "A Negro Patriot," "The Yazoo Fraud," "Removal of the Cherokees," "Slavery and Secession" and "The Reconstruction Period." To quote from Harris's Preface:~In preparing the pages that follow, the writer has had in view the desirability of familiarizing the youth of Georgia with the salient facts of the State's history in a way that shall make the further study of that history a delight instead of a task... It is unfortunately true that there is no history of Georgia [as yet] in which the dry bones of facts have been clothed with the flesh and blood of popular narrative.~This is a bright copy, just about fine (the merest trace of wear at a corner or two); being nonfiction, this is one of Harris's scarcer titles. Blanck 7136. (Inventory #: 13523)
