He was unable to complete the course with his Class of 1884 at Harvard, having been absent the entire junior year, but grafuated the following year (1885-86). During the three years 1881, 1882 and 1884 in which he was with the class, he rowed No. 6 on the University crew. After leaving college, Hudgens became an instructor in German, Greek and English literature at Colby Academy, New London, New Hampshire. Eventually, his failing eyesight forced him to abandon teaching and engage in business.
