New York: Viking, 1961. First edition. Fine/Very Good +. Inscribed by the author: "To Doc Erickson -- What's the word - gratitue? Thanks for the steady hand -- and head. Arthur Miller | Jan. 1961." A Fine copy of the book in a Very Good+ dust jacket wtih minor wear at the extremities and slight toning to the spine.Arthur Miller's script to the 1961 John Huston picture, starring Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and Montgomery Clift. (The film would be both Gable's and Monroe's last - they would pass away within 19 months of its release.) The Misfits, which follows the relationship that develops between a recent divorcee, a cowboy, and his friend, was a legendarily difficult film to make. The set was plagued by problems and delays -- many of them caused by the desert heat -- while Huston would often show up to the set intoxicated and lethargic. Miller's marriage was also in the last stages of its dissolution -- and he would divorce Monroe before the movie premiered. Although the movie did not attract much of an audience, it's standing has grown in the years following its release, and now it has something of a cult following. "Marilyn Monroe, the Saint of the Nevada Desert… she haunts you, you'll not forget her." (Contemporary review in The Village Voice). Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.
