Book Description
New York G. P. Putnam's Sons 1900 Hardcover First Edition 381pp. Octavo [20 cm] Brown cloth covered boards with gilt and black ink stamped titles on the spine and front cover, and elaborate green, black and gilt stamped designs on the spine and front cover. Top edge gilt. Very good. The edges of the spine and covers are gently bumped and rubbed. The pages are very mildly browned. The dust jacket is in fair condition only, with numerous tears that have been backed with clear tape. The front inside flap was completely detached, but has been backed with clear tape. There are multiple small losses from the edges. The jacket is also darkened and rubbed. Protected with a plastic gaylord.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
top edge gilt : The top of the text block (the edges the pages that are visible when looking directly down at the top of a closed book) has been decorated with a gold-like finish.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
bumped : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
Fair : is a worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects must be noted. (defined by AB Bookman's Weekly)
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
