New York Farrar, Straus and Cudahy 1958 Hardcover First Edition 245pp. Octavo [21 cm] Black boards eighthbound in light gray cloth spine. Very good / Very good. Light bumping, darkening and rubbing at the head and tail of the spine. Minor spine slant. Yellow publisher's topstain. Old price sticker on the rear pastedown. Dust Jacket - has quite a bit of rubbing at the head and light rubbing at the tail of the spine with some at the very tips of the corners. Couple 1/4" chips in the head of the spine and on in the tip of each corner. The edges are chipped. Upper corner of front flap price clipped.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
rubbing : Abrasion or wear to the surface. Usually
used in reference to a book's boards or dust-jacket.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
price clipped : The portion of the dust jacket flap where the publisher prints the suggested price has been cut away. Usually this is a clean 1-2" diagonal cut made with scissors.
bumping : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
chipped : A defect in which small pieces missing from the edges.
tail : The heel of the spine.
pastedown : The paper glued to the inside cover of a hard cover book.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
