London Michael Joseph 1963 Hardcover First UK Edition VG+/VG+ Black cloth spine and boards. Fair amount of bumping at the head and tail of the spine and at the tips of the corners. Previous owner's gift inscription on the free front endpaper in blue pen. Dust Jacket - has light rubbing all around the outside edges. 1/3" chip in the lower front corner. 1/8" chip in the tip of each of the other corners. 1/2" closed tear in the upper edge of the rear cover.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
rubbing : Abrasion or wear to the surface. Usually
used in reference to a book's boards or dust-jacket.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
bumping : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
tail : The heel of the spine.
endpaper : The double leaves bound into a book at the front and rear after printing. One side is glued to the inner portion of the boards (the paste-down) and the other is left loose (free endpaper).
Fair : is a worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects must be noted. (defined by AB Bookman's Weekly)
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
closed tear : A tear in which no material has been lost.
