Boise, ID Syms-York Company 1974 Hardcover First Edition VG+/VG+ SIGNED - Octavo. Black cloth spine and boards. Very slight bump at the head and tail of the spine. Previous owner's bookplate on the front endpaper. Signed and inscribed by Driscoll on the free front endpaper in blue pen: "With best wishes / to my friend / ------- ------ / J. L. Driscoll." Illustrated with photographs. 297 pages. Dust Jacket - has light rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and all around the outside edges. 1/4" chip in the tip of each of the lower corners. Some wear (as described) but a nice signed copy.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
rubbing : Abrasion or wear to the surface. Usually
used in reference to a book's boards or dust-jacket.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
tail : The heel of the spine.
endpaper : The double leaves bound into a book at the front and rear after printing. One side is glued to the inner portion of the boards (the paste-down) and the other is left loose (free endpaper).
bookplate : A device (often decorative) affixed to the book, usually on the endpapers, which designates ownership (or former ownership).
inscribed : a short note written by the author or a previous owner in the beginning of a book, generally accompanied by a signature.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
