Book Description
New York. 1900.. Four volumes. xxvii,[3],352; vii,[3],427; ix,[3]339; xi,[3],363pp. plus five folding maps and 103 plates, as called for. Contemporary crushed hunter green morocco, ornately gilt, gilt inner dentelles, burgundy suede endpapers. Very minor wear to spine ends, spines faintly scuffed. Bottom right corner of last third of text in first volume lightly dampstained, only affecting a small portion of text, not affecting illustrations, else internally bright and clean. A beautiful set. The "Boone" edition of Roosevelt's greatest historical work, limited to 200 copies, with a leaf of the manuscript entirely in Roosevelt's hand inserted. The manuscript leaf contained in this copy reads (in part and with several corrections and cross-outs): "Horses and cattle brought into the new settlement in some number during the year; but the savages killed or drove off most of them. The loss of the milch cows was severely felt by the women. Moreover there were heavy freshets, flooding the low bottom on which the corn had been planted and destroying most of the crop." The "West" in this book is the trans- Appalachian frontier from the French and Indian War through the end of the 18th century, but the work certainly embodies the attitudes toward expansion which Roosevelt demonstrated after he became president, the year after the publication of this set. One of the prolific author- President's most famous works, in its most elegant format, with original manuscript. HOWES R433. BRADFORD 4701.
