Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Under Minot's Ledge Light depicts a yachting harbour with Minot's Ledge Light in the background, in the foreground are the schooners Tempest and Fortuna, the sloop Viva and the yawl, White Cap. Fortuna, designed by the Poillon Brothers in 1883, broke a record in her maiden race making her the most notable in this image. The schooner Tempest was built by Harrington in 1872, the keel sloop Viva was built by Dyer in 1874 and the keel yawl White Cap built by Adams and Story in 1878. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens.
