Book Description

Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1966 $3750. Quarter white buckram over yellow paper boards. The binding was made by Kim Dong of Seoul, the only surviving practitioner of the craft of yellow handmade papermaking for traditional Korean bindings. Folio. 31 x 43 cm. Frontispiece and twenty-two mounted specimens of movable type (twenty facsimiles, two originals). A little soiling to covers, bookplate on front pastedown. A near fine copy in original plain yellow dust jacket, in publisher's slipcase. Considered one of Korea's greatest cultural achievements, the discovery of movable type in metal is a Korean innovation in printing which dates as early as the thirteenth century and predates Western printing by nearly 200 years. This edition is considered the best work on the subject and is beautifully printed by Voyages Press, Tokyo. It was five years in the making.
