Pasted on inside front cover is a pale blue paper with the date, "October 1881", below which is pasted a printed obituary annoucement, " - The death in his Canadian home is reported of the Rev. Josiah Henson, generally regarded as the original hero of Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Deceased, who visited England a few years since, and was presented to the Queen, was many years a slave, and at the time of his death had attained the age of 87, leaving 11 children, 44 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren." Pencilled on second free leaf, "Given by", inked, "Mrs. E.S. Auburn", pencilled "To Ellen McCarthy 21st Birthday, 1896". One 1 cent and one 2 cent stamp pasted on page beneath gift inscription. Two illustrations, one of the Rev. Josiah Henson and one of Harriet Beecher Stowe at beginning of book.
