Book Description

Lowville, NY: Romeyn Beck Hough Originally issued (with the help of Hough's daughter) in 14 volumes, we present here the first THREE VOLUMES ONLY. Each is complete, with all sample sheets and text description pamphlet present. Volume 1 is dated 1888, and contains 27 sample sheets. Volume 2 is dated 1891, and contains 26 sample sheets. Volume 3 is dated 1892 and contains 26 sample sheets. Wood samples in each are generally bright and clean with a very occasional crack in the samples, as normal (these are wafer thin sections suitable for viewing through a microscope or for viewing by holding up to the light). Each card contains a transverse, radial, and tangential section, in addition to the names of the wood samples. Each volume is housed in a green cloth slipcase, with an 3 sided inner sleeve and a text description for that volume in original paper wraps. All three slipcases are quite worn, with minor insect damage. The closing hasp is lacking on volumes one and three. The spine panel of the inner sleeve for volume 2 is detached on one side. All three inner sleeves match their respective volumes. The text descriptions are all very good, noting spine loss to all three (still sound and usable). The slipcases could have new cloth attached to clean the set up if desired by the new owner. As is, the important part, the samples themselves, are in wonderful, clean shape noting the usual occasional cracks in the sample that are part and parcel of the manufacturing process. A useful reference work for those interested in identifying woods that in many cases are no longer available (furniture trade, antiques trade, natural history historians, etc).. Hard Cover. Very Good.
