As Morley notes in his introduction, this important treatise was published during an important moment in India's history. This was the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which brought about the end of the East India Company's rule in India and led to direct rule by the British government (British Raj) of much of the Indian subcontinent for the next 90 years.
