Blue cloth boards, gilt lettering, in blind decorative elements, frontispiece, fold-out plate, fold-out map at rear, purple topstain. 8vo. 611pp plus Index. Illus. (b/w plates). Index. Inscribed by Hunter to noted author, John J. Rowlands. Laid in ephemera includes an original Prospectus for Hunter's Old Papermaking in China and Japan (quite scarce) and a specimen of his renowned watermarked sheet with "Dard Hunter" and his portrait as a young man (generally only seen bound into Before Life Began). Original DJ (price 12.50) tipped in in parts (front, rear, spine and front printed flap (rear blank flap absent) at rear. An unusual copy with the original DJ mounted at the rear endpages and laid in related ephemera.
