Book Description
Austin: Cruger & Wing, Printers, [1840].. 356pp. Quarto. Modern calf, hand-tooled with extra gilt, morocco label. Additional names have been added in manuscript on the last blank leaf. A very good or better copy. "This is a Texas 'Domesday' book with lists of over 20,000 Texas landowners, arranged alphabetically by counties, with the lists for each county subdivided again into holdings of first, second, and third class. Against each name are columns, for number of certificate, for land holdings, whether in leagues, labor, or acres, with a column for date, and a place for remarks. It is an invaluable source for data on individuals and it shows quite conclusively the extent to which land in the thirty counties listed had been taken up. Harris County leads with thirty-six pages of names under the various subdivisions, followed by Red River County with twenty-seven pages. Two pages required for Refugio County show its slight settlement at that time" - Streeter TEXAS. Streeter notes only 200 copies were printed. Not in Raines, Graff, or Eberstadt's TEXAS CATALOGUE 162. In an exquisite English binding. STREETER TEXAS 453.
