Book Description

[New York: Street & Smith], 1899.. Original pictorial wrappers, printed in red and blue. Wrappers a bit frayed and lightly chipped at spine, typical tanning of the text, but a nice copy of a very fragile book. First edition, issued as #39 in the Street & Smith Series, "True Blue Stirring Stories of Naval Academy Life." By the time he was twenty-one, Sinclair had written some hundred novelettes under this pseudonym, and "Lieutenant Frederick Garrison." Johnson notes some of the titles in the S&S "Columbia Library Series," which frequently included reprints of stories from TRUE BLUE, and the Lilly Library Sinclair Exhibition Catalogue includes #s 1 and 13 from this series as examples. See Gottesman, pp.15-25 for further discussion of Sinclair's prolific, youthful career as a pulp hack writer. Uncommon.
