Book Description

London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1925). A folio, exquisitely bound in finely textured ivory linen with powerful pictorial cover and spine designs executed in gilt and turquoise blue. Top edge gilt. This is NUMBER 202 OF 600 COPIES ONLY, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. There are twelve color plates by Nielsen tipped into the book. There is a curious line of discoloration which crosses the front board. Some wear to the extremities and a bit of soiling, else a very handsome copy indeed. The artist was born in Copenhagen in 1886. He chose an artistic life after leaving the pursuit of medicine, preferred by his family. His artistic pursuits were varied and passionate and his life ended in "the wilderness that was then Hollywood..in obscurity in 1957." He worked for a time for Disney, contributing the marvelous "Night On Bald Mountain" sequence to the wonder of Fantasia. In Christopher Finch's massive work on Walt Disney, Kay Nielsen's name is never mentioned. Several murals that he did in Los Angeles have been destroyed. This book resides in the lofty company of the work of some of the most celebrated and sought-after illustrators of The Golden Age of Book Design. ( Larkin 4)
