San Francisco, (1899). . 6 1/2 x 10. xlviii, (4), 5-200 pages. Collated complete. First& last pages darkened by acid migration from the boards. Printed cloth, floral endpapers, edges dyed red. Penciled ownership inscription of A. J. Baumann, The Printer at 268 Market Street, San Francisco. Label on rear pastedown for The System Press, 25 California Street, San Francisco. Some wear and soil, very good. The prefatory material shows a number of artistic display designs using type and ornamental material. There are 26 pages of decorative material, 30 pages of illustrated printing equipment & presses, and an Index. The foundry was started in 1888 as Hawks & Shattuck under the ownership of Nelson Hawks (inventor of the American Point System) and William Shattuck. In 1894 it incorporated to Pacific States Type Foundry under the control of Wm Shattuck and his brother. It continued until the earth quake and fire of 1906. This apears to be their last specimen. Specimens from this foundry are quite rare. OCLC notes two university copies, Annenberg/Saxe note 5 institutional (3 in Calif.)
