First edition. Chez Didot, Paris 1746 - 1759. 17 volumes. First 15 volumes complete , with a general index and one supplementary Vol.( XVII), entitled 'Suite de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages', containing accounts of the Dutch East Indies. 17 volumes, total. 4to, titles printed in red and black, engraved portrait of the editor, 335 engraved maps, plans and plates, many folding including 108 maps of Africa, 129 of Asia, 81 of the Americas. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments, morocco labels, lightly rubbed, some splitting along the hinges, all covers solidly attached and are in good plus condition. Lacks the final two volumes of text and the index volume, brought out in subsequent years, entitled "Continuation de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages". An attractive set that includes accounts of all the principal early Australian voyages as well as an account of the discovery of Australia by the Dutch including Roggeveen's voyage to the Terres Australes (features the great Bellin map with the hypothetical east coast of Australia ) Other world voyages include African voyages , the early Portuguese and English voyages to West Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, with a general account of the Dutch at the Cape. There are particularly full accounts given of the Dutch and French voyages to the East Indies, voyages to China, and the British East India Company's voyages to India and Ceylon. The Pacific voyages include those of Magellan, Schouten, and Le Maire, Drake, Sarmiento, Cavendish, Spilbergen, Narborough, Rogers, Cowley, Frezier, and Anson. These are included in the first 15 volumes . The final 3 vols that are lacking are titled Hill 1391
