London:: George Virtue,. 1838.. Good -. 4to, 216 pp, b&w frontis with b&w illus throughout. Green buckram and half leather cover. Decorative gilt bands and gilt title on spine. Spine is rubbed and corners are bumped. The back cover had separated and has been repaired with paper hinge tape. Marbled end papers. Light fox spotting throughout, especially on verso of plates. Fold out map at page one has no fox spotting, but has chips at right edge which do not affect image. Owner's signature in pencil on front free end papers, John A. English. The Waldensians were dissenters to the Roman Catholic church who originated in southern France in the twelfth century.

spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
hinge : The portion of a book near the spine that is intended to flex to allow the book to open.
verso : The page bound on the left side of a book, opposite to the recto page.
4to : Or quarto. A term used generally to describe the approximate size of a book, a book that is about 10" to 12" tall and roughly squarish in shape. The term is based on the size of paper traditionally used by book printers which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.
bumped : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
buckram : A cloth made of cotton or linen which is used to cover a book.
