In text illustrations include depictions of religious statues, a native still, a battle scene and a beach scene. One half leather with marbled boards, with gilt title at spine. Second volume cracked at spine; covers detached. Fascinating topics the difficulty of preaching to the natives, to the frequent tribal wars, to the impact of disease brought to the islands by the missionaries. Covers are rubbed at corners and at spine ends; internally, signature in brown pencil at ffep, o/w very good.
