The first half of the book is devoted to a month by month account of the year of non-war events such as the return of Dr. Mawson, Shackleton's new expedition for the Antarctic (the Endurance expedition), wreck of Empress of Ireland, Mexican troubles, unrest and martial law in South Africa. The second half is devoted to events of WWI.
