Book Description
London:: John Murray,. 1818.. Hardcover. Very good. Second, and best edition. 8vo, [8], 323pp, [1]; engraved frontispiece portrait and 5 colored lithograph plates. Contemporary speckled calf boards, tastefully rebacked in brown calf with gilt decoration and red title label. Scant light foxing; overall a very good copy. Abbey Travel 559; Huntress 188c. The ship Alceste brought Lord Amherst to China to serve as ambassador and to ameliorate the relationship between China and Great Britain, which was strained by issues pertaining to the China trade. During the course of its voyage the ship was wrecked on an uncharted reef near Borneo but the crew and passengers were eventually rescued. This is the best edition of this work, and the first to include the plate of Fort Maxwell. Also included is the account of a meeting with Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena.
