Book Description

London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1804. vii, 81, [3]pp., sm. 8vo. With the half-title and terminal publisher's advertisements, contemporary manuscript "Vocabulary of Fashion" inserted before the half-title (this manuscript frayed at the outer edge and cropped at the bottom but mostly intelligible), a couple of manuscript notes in the text, one in a blank lower margin which has been folded by the binder for preservation. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt; joints split but holding. First edition, a moralistic look at the amusements of the town, and their addictive nature. There is quite full description, including a poetic “Ode on the Spring. By a Man of Fashion,” where Lo! the party-giving dames, Fair Fashion’s train, appear, Disclose the long-expected games, And wake the modish year. The manuscript “Vocabulary” has definitions like “Conscience: something to swear by.” Three copies in OCLC: Chicago, Indiana, and Vassar.
