Book Description

London: Printed by W. Sayes, for William Hawes, 1704. xvi,[iv], 128, 121-279, [1]pp., 8vo. With the initial blank leaf and with the original title, later replaced by a cancel; a little marginal staining at the beginning, p. [iv] in the final preliminary bifolium a little short (clearly an economical use of paper by the original printer, not a later defect; only the headline is partly affected). Contemporary panelled and sprinkled calf, spine gilt; foot of spine worn and label missing. First edition, the rare first issue (the cancellans title added “To which is added a Liturgy. . . .”). Ostervald’s 1702 “Epistle Dedicatory” is to “the Lords, & all the Honourable Members of the Society establish’d in England, For Propagating Christian Knowledge.” Humfrey Wanley at that time was Secretary to the S.P.C.K. and so landed the translation job. As far as I can tell it is one of only three or four works published by Wanley during his lifetime.
