Book Description

London: Printed for John Booth, G. G. and J. Robinson, and B. and J. White, 1794. [viii], 152pp., 8vo. With the initial blank leaf and the half-title, manuscript corrections to pp. 10, 90, and 151 in the hand of the author’s daughter Catharine Octavia Tollemache, who has inscribed the initial blank “Miss Helen Foote, with affectionate Regards from her Attached Friend Catharine Octavia Tollemache.” Early, probably circa 1830, cloth, morocco spine label. First octavo edition, following the two quarto editions published the preceding year. It seems likely that this octavo edition contains the first appearance of Mrs. Cowley’s tribute to Lady Manners, “On Reading the Verses of Lady Manners to Solitude”; this poem is “Dated from Southampton, October 4, 1793.” Catharine Octavia Tollemache was born in 1800, the eleventh child of Sir William and Lady Manners, afterwards known as “Talmash or Tollemache.” Lady Manners herself was Irish, the daughter of Thaddeus Gray of Lehina, Co. Cork. Jackson, Romantic Poetry by Women, p. 212, no. 1(b).
