Book Description

London: Printed for J. Clark in Fleetstreet, and to be sold at the Pamphlet-Shops in Town and Country, 1748. Publish’d in an Evening Paper, intitled, The National Journal, or Country Gazette. Which began to be publish’d on Saturday, March 22d, 1746, and was suppress’d on Thursday, June the 12th following, by the Printer and Author’s being taken into Custody. . . . 122pp., 8vo. With the four-page “Appendix” usually missing (see below). A fine copy in contemporary marbled boards, vellum tips, elegantly rebacked in red morocco. gilt. First edition of this collection of pieces from a suppressed Jacobit newspaper. Almost all copies, including both at the British Library, lack the four-page “Appendix,” which contains a “Political Letter printed in this Journal on Tuesday, June 10, 1746,” which was the birthday of the “Son to that unfortunate Monarch, James the II.” The letter is quite inflammatory, and may well itself have been suppressed in this book: both pages 118 and 122 end with “Finis.”
