Book Description

London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1837. xii, 264 pp., 12mo. Woodcut frontispiece and illustrations. Original blindstamped red cloth. A fine copy. “The Fifth Edition, Enlarged, Corrected, and now first Embellished with Eighty-Two Woodcuts.” Old Friends in a New Dress was first published in three shilling parts by Darton and Harvey in 1807, reprinted, then collected together in 1826. This fifth edition adds not only the woodcuts but also seventeen new fables, and for the first time identifies the author. Richard Scrafton Sharpe is an underrated, not to say neglected, author, probably because most of his books are so rare. These fables are a significant contribution in themselves, and he appears also to have written Dame Wiggins of Lee and the first English limericks in Anecdotes and Adventures of Fifteen Gentlemen.
