NY:: Brentano's,, Circ.1900.. Pogany, Willy.. Small 4to. Three quarters olive green leather backed marbled paper covered boards with gilt title and decoration to spine. Chipping to head of spine and minor wear to edges. Beautifully illustrated by Pogany. Includes 11 full color tipped-in illustrations along with many vignettes and full page black and white plates. Decorative border frames each page. Unobtrustive pen markings to bottom edges of title and contents pages, otherwise, the interior is very clean. Marbled endpages with tight binding. The top edge of the text block is gilted, though a rectangular section has been colored in black. Unpaginated. Despite the noted flaws, this remains a very attractive and charming book. POE/012406. boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
chipping : A defect in which small pieces missing from the edges.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
4to : Or quarto. A term used generally to describe the approximate size of a book, a book that is about 10" to 12" tall and roughly squarish in shape. The term is based on the size of paper traditionally used by book printers which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.
tipped-in : used to describe something which has been glued into a book, for example a bookplate.
marbled paper : A decorative, multi-colored paper, sometimes used as end papers, or to cover the outside of a hardcover.
