Book Description

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,. 1914. original pictorial tan buckram cloth, front panel stamped in black, light blue and yellow, spine panel stamped in black.. A fine copy. Most of the pictorial dust jacket, worn at edges and. missing the spine panel, is laid in. (#118781). First edition. First printing with "Published April, 1914" and Scribner device on copyright page. Mixed collection of short fiction. "The Incandescent Lily" is an Oriental romance and borderline lost race story in which a young botanist finds a rare lily unknown to the Western world in a virtually inaccessible, hidden valley in China, inhabited by an ancient race whose presence is unknown to modern Chinese rulers. A contemporary review implies that it is a puzzle story along the lines of Stockton's "The Lady or the Tiger?" Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 M- 1012.
