Monograph wit h 127 photographs, drawings and plans on a major German architect and painter (1781-1841) who adapted classical forms in his structures. Hitchcock, Architecture 19th and 20th Centuries, deems Schinkel the only architect of the first half of the nineteenth century of comparable stature to John Soane: . . . the great international master of two successive phases of Romantic Classicism. Like Inigo Jo nes, he was originally a designe r of theatre sets, of which examples are shown. His works include the Berlin Schauspielhaus and Altes Museum and extensive work for Frederick William IV in Potsdam.
