Rubbed; rebacked preserving original back strip; occasional foxing. Bookplate of Pamela Lister (who, with her husband Raymond, the author, illustrator and expert on Samuel Palmer, had a passionate interest in ballet ). Ten steel-engraved portraits and numerous wood-engraved vignettes. Text pages within multi-colored geometric or pictorial borders. The engraved portraits include Grisi, Ellsler, Taglioni, Cerrito and others. Works discussed are Giselle, Barber of Seville, La Sylphide, The Jewess and Norma. A beautiful Victorian book describing contemporary ballets and operas and their stars.
