Book Description

Rare Postcard of Belgium’s Fascist Party [ANTI-SEMITISM] Van Het Verdinaso. Verdinaso Political Party. Tielt, Belgium. October, 1934. Postcard measures 5 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 inches. Very Good Condition. Relatively unknown in World War II Flemish history is the presence of political parties for the extreme right. Verdinaso - an acronym of Verbond van Dietsche National Solidaristen (Union Diets National Socialists) - was founded in 1931 by the politician Joris Van Severen. Radically concerned with Flemish nationalism, it sought to reunite the Netherlands and Flanders into the state of Dietsland and defended the benefits of militias. Several “National Days” were celebrated each year in which the movement would gather in one place and Van Severen would speak. This postcard commemorates October 7, 1934, in Tielt, a Belgium municipality in the province of West Flanders. The Verdinaso was the only Belgian organization to assume a Fascist character at this time but was initially opposed to the ideology of Adolph Hitler. Upon Van Severen’s death, in a French political prisoner camp in 1940, the party collapsed.
